ATDM Adds Augmented Reality Welding

Virtual training for each of the four welding processes will help learners build fundamentals faster and reduce consumable use. It’s a safer on‑ramp to the craft that will shape students into mission‑ready welders for the maritime industrial base.  

IALR and Virginia Teach Team Up for Industrial Fermentation Training  

The five-day, hands-on workshop was a blend of classroom instruction, laboratory experiments and real-world insights into scaling up microbial processes. Participants included undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and working professionals.  

Southside Mechanical Apprenticeship Welcomes Nine New Apprentices 

After launching a plumbing apprenticeship program with support from IALR’s ExTRA program in 2022, the company recently added HVAC as a program track. Southside has found apprenticeships to be a successful tool for attracting and retaining talent.

Dr. Melanie Lewis Joins IALR as Vice President, Advanced Learning

In her new role, Lewis will oversee educational and talent development initiatives, increase STEM capacity, and promote lifelong and service learning across Southern Virginia.

  • Explore the history, science and impact of non-destructive testing with industry experts in this podcast 🎧 Listen

  • In 2025, the IALR Conference Center hosted 580 events, programs and meetings with more than 32,000 total attendees. 

  • The ATDM program held two graduation ceremonies in December to celebrate a total of 100 students who are now prepared for defense manufacturing careers --> Read about the Dec. 12 graduation and Dec. 19 graduation.
