Successful Summer STEM Camps

REACH AmeriCorps Receives Continuation Grant, Recruiting 15 Members

The Regional Engagement to Advance Community Health (REACH) AmeriCorps program is recruiting 15 part-time REACH Community Health Educators to conduct community health workshops over nine months. IALR was awarded a $218,678 grant from AmeriCorps to continue this program for a third year.

Mitchell Doss recently joined the IALR Applied Research team in a new full-time position as Value Chain Coordinator, but his involvement with IALR goes
back nearly a decade. Doss was a participant in the Academy for Engineering and Technology, a two-time intern and a Graduate Research Specialist through Virginia Tech.

IALR is proud to announce a new study that explores the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria to significantly boost spinach yields in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Published in Technology in Horticulture, this research is another example of how bacterial endophytes – naturally occurring biostimulants found in plants – can enhance plant growth, improve nutrient uptake and increase stress tolerance, particularly in CEA.

- The 2024 Sterling Lighting Summit brought 100 attendees to the IALR Conference Center for several days to network and share ideas and best practices for architectural and landscape lighting design.
- A new cohort of approximately 115 students began the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program early in July. These students will complete the program in November.
- In July, Wonder Community members began the month with a cooking class from Chef John with Megabytes Café, learning how to make fried chicken, pasta salad and pavlovas. Members then held a joint workshop with the New College Institute in Martinsville, exploring the world of the Cricut Design Space and creating beautiful designs using permanent vinyl. Lastly, members looped their first chains in a beginner's crochet class led by Alex Pearson, Marketing and Program Development Intern at IALR.
- More than 40 businesses attended the ATDM Career Fair in July, providing job-seeking students an opportunity to learn about career opportunities and even interview with employers.

Local Leaders Gather for Economic Development Training

The Southern Virginia Regional Alliance hosted a multi-day economic development training at the IALR Conference Center. Local and regional economic developers joined infrastructure, utility and workforce service providers for a workshop on best practices for preparing to
market the assets of the region in support of existing and prospective businesses.

- Speyside Bourbon Cooperage Inc. announced that it will invest $16.85 million to build a new stave mill in Pittsylvania County’s Brosville Industrial Park, the company’s fourth facility in Virginia. The new stave mill will create 40 new jobs and source 40 percent of its timber needs from Virginia forest landowners.
