REACH Partnership Improving Public Health
A systems approach to improve community health, the Regional Engagement to Advance Community Health (REACH) Partnership brings disparate and siloed health providers together, deploying coordinated care teams to reduce avoidable emergency department and hospital use and address chronic disease and health factors.

Tenth Cohort Graduates from ATDM
Fifty-nine students graduated as part of the 10th cohort of the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program during a ceremony on Friday, March 29, at IALR. A 16-week, hands-on program, ATDM prepares adult learners in the skills needed to work in the submarine and defense industrial base – the system of companies that produces parts and equipment for the U.S. military.
Second GO TEC® Robotics Competition a Great Success
Approximately 76 middle school students from eight school divisions across the Commonwealth participated in the 2024 GO TEC® VEX IQ Robotics Competition hosted at IALR on March 28. Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC) is a progressive, hands-on talent development program administered by IALR.

190 Students Participated in AspHIRE Mock Interview Day
IALR, Longwood University and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center offered AspHIRE Mock Interview Day 2024 to 190 high school students this Spring. Students participated in mock interviews and learned about professionalism and other important workplace skills with local professionals. Students came from 10 school divisions.
Partners Unite for Successful Family Literacy Night at IALR
In a display of community collaboration, IALR hosted a successful Family Literacy Night on Pi Day, 3.14. Approximately 150 guests participated, engaging in various literacy activities based on books. Fifty-six dedicated volunteers dressed up as book characters to run the activity stations and represented 13 community-based organizations. Free books were available as giveaways.

Harnessing Endophytes for Disease Management in Agriculture
In a recently published study, a team of researchers led by IALR Senior Scientist Dr. Sajeewa Amaradasa investigated the efficacy of a bacterial endophyte as a biocontrol agent against Pythium ultimum for cucumber and lettuce production. The study found that treating cucumber seedlings with IALR 1619 improved their survival rates while lettuce plants saw better growth and higher yield than untreated ones.

This Month at IALR
  • The Institute Conference Center (ICC) hosted God’s Pit Crew’s annual Benefit Banquet, a three-day event with approximately 1,500 participants.

  • Seventy-five students from the Piedmont Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science and Technology toured the research labs and facilities at IALR on March 27.

  • The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company donated two replacement tag axle tires to the GO TEC® program for the GO TEC Mobile Lab.

  • The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program hosted a career fair, allowing employers to meet, interview and even hire job-seeking ATDM students. IALR hosts and leads ATDM in collaboration with partners.

  • This month, the Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning celebrated partnerships with outside collaborators for three out of four March workshops. Members ended the three-part series with the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce for the Smart Seminars Unlocking the Power of AI for Small Business Success. Members created two-layer heat transfer designs for St. Patrick's Day in the next workshop. Traveling up the road, members visited partners at the New College Institute for a Cricut cardmaking workshop. Lastly, the month ended with Chef John Clark at Megabytes café for an Easter Meal Sides workshop, where members made scones, salad, cupcakes, potatoes and asparagus bundles.

Summer AmeriCorps Positions
The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is recruiting summer STEM educators who will focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students. These AmeriCorps members will prepare students for middle school to improve their literacy, math, and/or STEM skills. Summer hours may vary between 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Monday-Friday (30-40 hours/week) over 10 weeks.
IALR Named Top Employer for Interns
IALR has been named one of the 2024 Top Virginia Employers for Interns by the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP). Congratulations to several other organizations across Southern Virginia that received this recognition, including the Danville Historical Society, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge, Danville Police Department and EMI Imaging.
College Students Working in the CEA Innovation Center
Working part-time as Undergraduate Research Technicians in the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Innovation Center, Jacob Haymore (a student at Danville Community College) and Cameron Dallas (a student at Averett University) have gained valuable experience and supported vital research projects.

Additive Manufacturing Schoolhouse Celebrates Opening
The Naval Aviation School for Additive Manufacturing (NASAM) recently marked its official commencement as a naval aviation training facility.

"NASAM is a collaborative learning environment where military maintainers and artisans from across multiple system commands and services will be equipped with the competencies needed to produce additive manufactured products critical for mission success."
