The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is seeking employers and businesses across Southern Virginia to partner and participate in work-based learning programs. This opportunity includes participating in mock interview days, hosting an intern or bringing in teacher externs.

Equipped with one of the largest coordinate measurement machines (CMM) on the East Coast and a bevy of other top-tier qualification tools and equipment, the IALR Metrology Lab provides critical measurement services for the Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence and has the capability to provide support for private industry.
Institute Conference Center Hosts Successful 2023
In 2023, the Institute Conference Center (ICC) created a custom, client-focused environment for hundreds of events, some of which brought in hundreds of attendees for multiple days. In addition to a few of the large conferences and public events highlighted below, many other organizations, associations and businesses from Virginia and North Carolina – as well as around the country – trusted the Institute Conference Center to host their executive retreats, corporate trainings and business meetings.

REACH Partnership Selected as a
2023 Health Quality Innovator of the Year
The Regional Engagement to Advance Community Health (REACH) Partnership has been named as a 2023 Health Quality Innovator of the Year. A systems approach to improve community health, the REACH Partnership addresses systemic barriers to physical and mental health services for at-risk populations.
 
  • The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce and IALR are partnering through the Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning to offer a three-part series that will equip business owners with artificial intelligence tips to improve their marketing and social media strategies and tactics. These classes take place on February 21, February 28 and March 6 and cost $10 each for chamber members and $15 for non-members.

  • Join IALR for an hour-long public campus tour to discover some of the programs and services impacting the region! Tours are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 and Feb. 29. These tours are free, but registration is required.

  • Learn a new skill with one of the upcoming computer training workshops! This month IALR will provide three-hour, introductory courses on Microsoft Excel (Feb 13, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and Canva (Feb. 22, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.).

  • The Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning is offering two February workshops. The first is a Valentine’s Day painting class at 10 a.m. on Feb. 10. Later in the month, members can learn to complete two-layer designs with a Cricut at 10 a.m. on Feb. 24.

81 Students Graduate from
Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing Program
Eighty-one students graduated from the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program during a ceremony on Feb. 2. Since the program launched in 2021, 413 students have graduated, the majority of them going on to work for companies in the defense and submarine industrial base.
ATDM Program to Be Featured on Montel Williams’
Military Makeover
Montel Williams’ Military Makeover will feature the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing program. This feature will air 7:30 a.m. ET/PT on Feb. 9 and Feb. 15 on Lifetime Network. It will also air on rotation on the Armed Forces Network (AFN) around the world. AFN is a free streaming service for military personnel.
 
This Month at IALR
Many impactful people and groups have visited IALR to learn more about what IALR does and to discover partnership opportunities to grow industries and transform Southern Virginia. Some notable visitors include:

  • The international team from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership
  • Kathy Byron, Deputy Director External Affairs, Virginia Dept. of Workforce Development and Advancement  
  • Dr. Sascha Hartig, Additive Manufacturing Lead for the German Navy, along with a group of three representatives from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)

Chamber of Commerce Meeting

The Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce held its 2024 annual meeting at IALR on Feb. 1, bringing together hundreds of representatives from member organizations. Linda Green, IALR’s Vice President of Economic Development, served as one of the keynote speakers along with Todd Haymore, Managing Director of Hunton Andrews Kurth.

IALR staff, along with many former colleagues, celebrated Leslie Dobbins, who recently retired from her position of Vice President of the Institute Conference Center.


Busy Month of Wonder Events

January is National Hobby Month, so the Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning celebrated with a focus on arts and crafts. In the first workshop of the year, members used the Cricut to etch and create heat transfer projects and cards. The second celebration of hobbies was a return to another member's favorite, a painting workshop that included a step-by-step tutorial to create cute snowman designs.
