Leaders Break Ground on Navy’s Regional Training Center
Local leaders and representatives from the United States Navy broke ground on the Navy’s regional training center, a 100,000-square-foot facility that will house the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program as it scales to graduate 800-1,000 students annually by 2025.

Hundreds of attendees, including participants in the third annual ATDM and Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence Summit and current ATDM students, were on hand for this exciting moment.

Danville Life Saving Crew Launches State's First
Registered EMT Apprenticeship Program
In partnership with IALR, the Danville Life Saving Crew and First Aid Crew, Inc. – the primary Emergency Medical Services provider for the City of Danville – signed 13 individuals as Virginia’s first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) registered apprentices on Oct 6. These 13 apprentices are beginning the process of obtaining their Emergency Medical Technician Certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and their Journeyworker Credential from the State Apprenticeship Agency.

Ferrum Professor Diversifying CEA Knowledge
During Fellowship at IALR 
Dr. Tim Durham, Associate Professor of Crop Science at Ferrum College, is leveraging a fellowship to work one day a week at the Virginia Tech-IALR Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Innovation Center, where he assists with research and operations.

Litehouse Foods of Danville, Va., signed the company’s first industrial maintenance mechanic apprentice during a ceremonial event at IALR on Oct. 6.

This year's Career ChoICE Youth Expo events involved approximately 95 activity stations and introduced 4,000+ students to career and educational opportunities and pathways in Southern Virginia.

Virginia Tech-IALR Researcher
Wins Graduate Student Poster Competition
Congratulations to Mitchell Doss, Virginia Tech Master's student based at IALR, for winning first place in the graduate student poster competition at the Virginia Tech School of Plant and Environmental Sciences Research Symposium and Blaser Lecture in Blacksburg. Doss's poster included research Doss has conducted utilizing the SMART Tables at IALR for plant imaging, growth and health monitoring.
Regional Consortium Awarded Federal Tech Hubs
Strategy Development Grant
A consortium led by the New River Valley Regional Commission has been selected for a highly competitive $500,000 federal Tech Hubs Strategy Development Grant. These resources will allow more than 15 partners, which includes IALR, to refine their strategy and position for future funding opportunities collaboratively.
A Month of Successful Events at IALR
  • The 2023 Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) and Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) Summit brought 400+ to IALR for a significant event focused on galvanizing the industry.

  • The 2023 Southern Virginia Regional Housing Summit, hosted at IALR, brought together over 200 community partners, architects, developers and financial institution representatives to discuss exciting, new residential housing developments in six surrounding localities

  • The Southern Piedmont Technology Council recognized its Innovation Stars at its annual banquet at IALR. Seven innovators across the region received awards and keynote speaker Zachary Doerzaph, Executive Director of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), provided insights into technological advances in the transportation sector.

  • IALR hosted two campus tours in October. Participants explored the facilities, learned about programs, and saw the contributions to economic transformation up close. Register for the upcoming tour on December 5.

  • The Advanced Learning team hosted computer training workshops for Canva and Microsoft Excel during the month of October. Several tickets are available for an upcoming Excel class on Nov. 9 and Canva class on Nov. 14.

  • The Future of Hospitality & Tourism Workforce Summit, hosted by IALR and organized by Averett University and the Virginia Tech Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, featured various speakers and panel discussions on topics like hospitality workforce challenges and destination development.

  • The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing program hosted a Workforce Connections event, allowing approximately 90 career-seeking students to visit with 25 employers.

  • Members of the Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning displayed their knowledge of using the Cricut by creating vinyl designs for pumpkins. Members also created 24 tick-or-treat bags that were donated to the Community Improvement Council, Inc. (CIC) Head Start program. Members continued building on their Cricut skills by creating permanent personalized mugs using infusible ink.
