4,000+ Students Participate in Career ChoICE Expo Events
The 2023 Career ChoICE Youth Expo events – hosted at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham and Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville – allowed 4,027 middle and high students to connect with employers and learn about career pathways and employment opportunities in their region.

240+ Attend Second Annual CEA Summit East
Building alliances, sharing information and forging new connections were key themes that drove the 2023 edition of the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Summit East co-hosted by Indoor Ag-Con and the Virginia Tech-IALR CEA Innovation Center.

50 Students Complete ATDM Program
The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program hosted a completion ceremony on Friday, Sept. 15, at IALR to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the 50 students in the program’s seventh cohort.

IALR to Lead Work-Based Learning Collaborative
IALR will lead the new Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) Innovative Internship effort serving Southern Virginia. This collaborative will extend the impact of IALR’s existing work-based learning framework to better support students at the postsecondary level. A $250,000 grant from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) funds this initiative.
Register for Southern Virginia Regional Housing Summit
Registration is open for the second annual Southern Virginia Regional Housing Summit hosted at IALR on Oct. 17. Aimed at stimulating the creation of new residential housing projects throughout Southern Virginia, this event is perfect for builders, developers, contractors, home renovators, financial institutions, architects and local community champions.

The Registration Deadline is Oct. 6.

Cohort of 96 Students Begins ATDM Program
A new cohort of 96 students began the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program on Oct. 2. In just four months, these students will develop the skills to work in the defense industrial base in one of five areas: welding, CNC machining, non-destructive testing, quality control inspection (metrology) and additive manufacturing.
Two IALR Employees Participating in Leadership Southside
Apprenticeship Coordinator II Natori Neal and Justin Owen, CNC Machining Instructor with the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program, are two of the 35 local leaders participating in this year’s cohort of Leadership Southside – a professional development program offered through the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.

Institute for Advanced Learning and Research sees growth
“We always look through the lens of what does industry need,” Tucker said. “It’s hard to have economic transformation when you are not aware or in-tune with what industry needs.”

  • IALR has several introductory computer workshops scheduled for October and November. Learn the basics of Microsoft Excel on Oct. 18 or Nov. 9 and develop some basic graphic design skills with an introductory Canva class on Oct. 11 or Nov. 14.

  • IALR will host several free group tours over the next few months. Registration is now open and limited to 10 spots.


  • A time to showcase opportunities and breakthroughs in the area housing market, the Southern Virginia Housing Summit will take place at IALR on Oct. 17. The registration deadline for this event is Oct. 6.

A Month of Successful Events at IALR
  • Sovah Health presented “Bite-Sized Well-Being During Times of Uncertainty” with Bryan Sexton, Ph.D., Director of the Duke Center for Advancement of Well-being Science, at IALR.

  • The Danville Office of Economic Development and Tourism hosted a Tourism Resource Collab at IALR on Sept. 13 to share tourism developments and equip local businesses.

  • Two August introductory computer classes - one for Canva, another for Microsoft Excel - at IALR were completely filled, providing attendees a foundational knowledge of these programs.

  • IALR hosted a guided group tour of the campus, focusing on IALR’s partnerships and mission of economic transformation. Browse upcoming tours here.

  • Danville Public Schools presented College Night on Sept. 12 with over 50 colleges/universities and organizations.

  • IALR's Applied Research division and the VT-IALR CEA Innovation Center hosted approximately 40 10th-grade students from the Pittsylvania STEM Academy for a tour at the end of August.

  • The Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning held two September workshops. Members learned how OneNote can be used as a digital notebook to not only collect their notes but to share and collaborate with others. During the first Mug Press workshop, members learned how infusible ink paired with the mug press can create fun and permanent designs on sublimation blanks. The second part of this workshop is coming on Oct. 28.
