IALR Seeking Volunteers to Assist with Career Expo Events
IALR needs volunteers to assist with welcoming students, passing out backpacks and ensuring things run smoothly at the upcoming Career ChoICE Youth Expo events in Farmville at Hampden-Sydney College (Sept. 20-21) and at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham (Sept. 27-28). Thousands of students attend these events each year.

IALR’s Summer Interns Contribute to Economic Transformation
Working in various divisions and departments across the organization, 17 interns completed an eight-week, paid internship experience at IALR during the summer.

CEA Summit East Keynote Speakers Announced
Two keynote speakers for the upcoming Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Summit East were announced this month! Virginia Secretary of Agriculture Matthew Lohr will discuss the state’s leadership role in the CEA sector in his keynote on the conference’s opening morning. AeroFarms President and Chief Financial Officer Guy Blanchard will shed light on AeroFarms’ journey towards resiliency during the keynote on the conference’s second day.
Connecting the Classroom to the Workplace
This year 21 Southern Virginia educators participated in the week-long Exploring Careers through Industry Teacher Externships (EXCITE) program, connecting with local industries and employers and making connections to their classrooms. Two cohorts of educators visited various employers, including government organizations, manufacturers, sawmills, HVAC companies, utility providers and many other industries.

Open Interview Events for AmeriCorps Programs
Do you want to contribute to the long-term success of your community? Are you looking for a service opportunity where you can make a difference? IALR is hosting open interviews for STEM/literacy tutors and community health educators for the Dan River Year AmeriCorps and REACH AmeriCorps programs four days in the next month: September 7, 15, 18, and 25.
Health Data Available for Danville
Data surrounding 32 measures and drivers of health for the City of Danville are now publicly available on a citywide and census tract level through the City Health Dashboard. This online database showcases dozens of health metrics and drivers on a granular level for just under 1,000 cities across the country.

IALR President Telly Tucker, CEcD, has been selected to the Virginia Business 2023-2024 Power List! Congratulations, Telly!

Virginia Business compiles the state's 500 most powerful corporate, philanthropic and public sector leaders each year.

  • All September computer workshops at IALR are already filled. Seats are available in introductory workshops for Microsoft Excel on October 18 and November 9 and for introductory Canva classes on October 11 and November 14.

  • Sovah Health invites you to a special speaking event, "Bite-Sized Well-Being During Times of Uncertainty," with Dr. Bryan Sexton, Director of Duke Center for the Advancement of Well-being Science on September 7 from 12:00 - 4:30 p.m.

  • Danville Public Schools presents College Night on September 12 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. with over 50 colleges/universities and organizations. This event is open to all regional students and parents.

  • The Danville Office of Economic Development & Tourism is hosting a Tourism Resource Collab at IALR on September 13 from 8-11 a.m. Local and regional tourism partners can learn about resources, hear success stories and learn about tourism developments in Danville and Pittsylvania County.


  • IALR will host a free guided group tour from 11:30 a.m - 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 28. Registration is now open and limited to 10 spots.

  • The Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning is hosting two workshops in September. On September 14 members can learn to make mugs using infusible ink with a Cricut machine, and on September 18 members can learn digital notetaking skills with OneNote.

ATDM Summit Announced
 
The third annual Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing Summit is returning to IALR October 10-12! The theme for the three-day event is “Galvanazing the Industry.” Registration will open shortly.
Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning, Megabytes Team up for Successful Pasta Class
Megabytes Chef John Clark taught 10 Wonder Community members how to make pasta and sauces from scratch. Members learned to mix, roll out and cook fresh pasta along with making fresh Bolognese and Puttanesca sauces. Stay tuned for more cooking-themed Wonder Community classes in the future.
Southern Virginia Housing Summit Returns to IALR
After a successful debut in 2022, the Southern Virginia Housing Summit is returning to IALR for the second year. This October 17 event allows several Southern Virginia localities to showcase the latest breakthroughs and opportunities in residential housing development. Registration opens September 8.
Secretary of Labor Visits GO TEC Lab
The Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor, Julie Su, visited the Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC™) lab at Brooks Crossing in Newport News in mid-August. GO TEC Training Coordinator Alecia Stancil shared the purpose, impact and growth of the GO TEC program, which will serve 50 middle schools by 2025. U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott and Virginia Senator Mamie Locke were also in attendance.
A Month of Successful Events at IALR
  • The (GO TEC) team hosted 15 instructors from Southern and Southwest Virginia middle schools to introduce new activities and provide additional training on current GO TEC technology and equipment.

  • The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce hosted Tom Barkin, President & CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, for a presentation at IALR as part of the Chamber’s regular Business at Breakfast series. Mr. Barkin provided an economic update and discussed his “on the ground” approach in the Fed’s Fifth District.

  • The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing program held a Workforce Connections event with over 25 employers at IALR in August. Students in ATDM's five program areas — additive manufacturing, CNC machining, non-destructive testing, quality control inspection (metrology) and welding — had the opportunity to discuss career prospects with employers.

  • IALR hosted two computer workshops in August. These three-hour training sessions in programs like Microsoft Excel and Canva provide a great foundation for beginners. September workshops have already filled up, but Canva and Excel classes are scheduled for October and November.

  • The Wonder Community of Lifelong Learning hosted several engaging workshops in August. Members toured Danville Science Center, and even got to create a personalized ruler using the laser engraver in the Creativity Lab. Members then created shirts using Cricut's Infusible Ink. During a Henna workshop, members learned about the Henna traditions and received their own tattoos.
